Lecturer Activities

My academic career as a biomedical scientist has provided me an excellent basis for fostering my desire to provide career guidance both in and out of the laboratory. I sought out experiences throughout my graduate training that provided exposure to the development and execution of course curricula, scientific communication skills and career development programming. Beyond the traditional classroom, participate in several committees and programs that have cultivated my own communication and leadership skills. Additionally, these experiences have resulted in my ability to provide better career guidance to undergraduate and graduate level trainees. My dissertation research project, provided me the opportunity to gain valuable experience conducting translational, team-focused science. My studies addressed the effects of novel therapies on the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and the relationship between ALS and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); this training was independently funded by a pre-doctoral Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA F31) from the NINDS. My immediate goal is to develop new approaches to fostering career development at UTHSCSA through my position as the Director of the Office of Career Development within the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Lecturer II within the Department of Pharmacology. The mission of the office is to provide a structured setting for the discussion and development of scientific communication skills and provide career development opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows at UTHSCSA. More can be found about the office and the programs we offer here.
