2007-2008 Graduate Student of the Year Reception

The Fifth Annual Graduate Student of the Year Award was presented to Ms. Jennifer Stewart at a reception on May 7, 2008. Ms. Stewart holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Biology from UTSA and is currently a fourth-year graduate student in the lab of Dr. George Henderson. She is extremely active in the science community, presenting papers at numerous local, state, and national meetings over the past several years, including the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience, the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism, and the Society for Neuroscience. Ms. Stewart has also received several travel awards and recently received an individual NRSA that will fund her research for the next two years.
Ms. Stewart is also involved in the scientific community through her mentorship of young aspiring scientists and her service on various committees. She has served as a mentor to undergraduate students through the Department's Summer Undergraduate Research Program and has also been very active in the recruitment of students into the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She also served as the Secretary of the Graduate Student Association (2005-2007) and was appointed by the Dean's Office to the UT Student Advisory Council in 2006.
Ms. Stewart's current research is focused on elucidating molecular mechanisms of astrocyte mediated neuroprotection in response to ethanol exposure in the developing brain. She was admitted to candidacy in December of 2007 and plans to complete her degree within the next 12 to 18 months.
