Farewell Dr. Julie Hensler!!!
It was a sad day...Friday, June 24th, 2016...the last day Julie Hensler, Ph.D., would be working in the Department of Pharmacology after accepting a new position as an Associate Professor (Pharmacology) with the US Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing at The Academy of Health Sciences, US Army Medical Department Center and School, Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston!
Dr. Hensler began her career here at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio over twenty years ago when she joined us as an Assistant Professor in 1993, from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a Reseach Assistant Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Frazer had just accepted the Chairman's position in the Department of Pharmacology in 1993 and Dr. Hensler was one of his first 'recruits', at the friendly urging of a colleague.
Julie has had numerous accomplishments, awards and honors in her 20+ years here and although there are too many to list individualy, here are a few of the highlights: she has had over twenty projects in the lab, both individual and collaborative, has held Councilor, VP and President elect offices for the International Society for Serotonin Research, is a member of Leadership Texas, a Foundation for Women's Resources and has won various Investigator and Merit Awards. She has been the Course Director or lecturer for over 80 courses and has mentored, supervised or been on the committee of over 30 undergraduate, graduate, pre-doctoral and post-doctoral individuals. Dr. Hensler has had over 140 abstracts, book chapters, journal articles and review articles published, of which over fifty are peer reviewed as well as serving as a reviewer for a dozen different publications. During her tenure she also was awarded numerous federal, state and private grants including but not limited to R01's(6), an R13, R21's(4), an R25 and an R29.
Some of Dr. Hensler's last duties included being a Science Review Administrator for Limited Submission Funding Opportunities, a co-principal investigator with the Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy, Director of the Physiology and Pharmacology Discipline, Chair of the Committee on Graduate Studies, a Pharmacology Track Student Advisor, a member of the Strategic Planning Executive Committee as well as the Council for Excellence in Women‘s Health.
A reception was held for Julie...amongst the numerous scientific projects and endeavors she is involved in, she also finds time to play the bagpipes...so the department gave something she has been wanting...a travel bag for her bagpipes.
Farewell Dr. Hensler...we will miss you...best wishes and best of luck!!!
