Congratulations Mikaela Sifuentes, Ph.D.!!!


Mikaela SifuentesOn November 30th, 2017, Neuroscience graduate student Mikaela Sifuentes (pictured left) presented her dissertation defense titled: 'Thyroid Hormone Neuroprotection From Ischemic Stroke by Stimulation of Astrocyte Fatty Acid Oxidation' to a lecture hall audience, whose members included her defense committee. She then went through a review of her dissertation and a question and answer process with the defense committee, before she was notified that she had successfully defended her dissertation and would be receiving her Ph.D.!

Dr. FrazerThe Department of Pharmacology held a reception on December 13th, 2017, in the Pharmacology Conference Room, to honor Dr. Sifuentes's accomplishment and to present her with her graduation 'gift', a personalized, custom, office chair. Department of Pharmacology Professor and Chairman, Alan Frazer, Ph.D. (above, right), recognized Mikaela's accomplishments and contributions as a Neuroscience graduate student including: a Translational Science Training Across Disciplines award, an American Heart Association SWA Predoctoral Fellowship and has been awarded seven travel awards to present data at scientific conferences. She is author on two book chapters, two reviews and two research articles and has submitted a first author publication to Stroke. Mikaela's mentor, Professor of Cell Systems and Anatomy James Lechleiter, Ph.D. (left) was not able to attend. In addition, the Graduate School Dean's Office presented Mikalea with another gift...a new leather briefcase!

Mikalea graciously thanked everyone for their support. She has accepted a position to become a Medical Writer for Acelity, a wound care medical device company headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
