Course Description:

The overall objective of this course will be to provide students with a current overview of the therapeutics related to major classes of drugs. The course will be required for Pharmacology students as a 3-hour course. Each section will be offered separately as 0.5-hour microelectives (see PHAR 5091, sections .012 - .017) for students in other programs.

Topics:

1. Autonomics (anatomy and physiology; catecholamines; cholinergic) Respiratory (COPD; asthma) Neuro-muscular blockage, GI
2. Renal (diuretics) Cardiovascular (antihypertensives; anti-lipemics; anti-anginals; heart failure; dysrhythmias; anticoagulants)
3. Central nervous system (Intro; anti-anxiety; hypnotics; antidepressants; antipsychotics; Parkinson's; anti-convulsants)
4. Chemotherapy (antibiotics; anti-fungal; anti-viral; anti-tubercular; anti-cancer)
5. Endocrine (Thyroid, Estrogens and Progestins, Androgens and Anabolic Steroids, Glucocorticoids, Insulin and Oral Hypoglycemic Agents)
6. Pain management (opiates/NSAIDS; local anesthetics; general anesthetics)

Grading: The course will include six examinations and six class discussions based on journal articles. Grading will be based on the exams (60%), class participation (35%), and attendance (5%). The course will be graded on a lettered scale.

Pre-requisite: INTD 5000
