Admissions Information


Admisssion Requirements

Applicants are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Applicants should have received credit for courses taken in:

Biology* 2 years as required for science majors
Chemistry* 1 year general chemistry & organic chemistry
Physics 1 year
Mathematics Minimum of 1 semester of calculus

*Courses should include laboratory experience



Standardized Test Requirements

All applicants must provide UTHSCSA with official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (general test). Test scores should be sent to the UTHSCSA Office of the Registrar directly from the Educational Testing Service. (UTHSCSA Code: 6908)


Foreign applicants must also submit official scores from the TOEFL. The following are the minimum requirements of the Graduate School:


Paper-based: 560
Computer-based: 220
Internet-based: 68

Application Deadline

The priority application deadline is January 15th of each year with a final application deadline of March 15th. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early and submit complete applications with all supporting materials to receive priority review. There is NO application fee. Selection Process

The Integrated Multidisciplinary Graduate Program's Admissions Committee is responsible for making admissions decisions. Selected applicants will be invited to come to the UTHSCSA at our expense for our recruitment weekend and will have an opportunity to interview with faculty members, as well as meet with current graduate students.



Financial Information

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers financial assistance, in the form of teaching and research assistantships, to full-time students admitted to the IMGP doctoral program. The annual stipend is currently $26,000. This will readily cover all living and educational expenses, including tuition and fees. Stipend support is provided by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in year 1 and by dissertation supervising professors beginning in year 2 of the program. Students may also apply for stipend support from training grants associated with specific areas of research.


Teaching and research assistants are considered in-state residents regardless of the length of time they have lived in Texas and are entitled to pay in-state tuition. For additional information, including a detailed listing of all applicable fees, click on the link below.

Housing is not offered by the UTHSCSA, but many apartment complexes are located near the Health Science Center. Living costs in San Antonio are generally lower than in many other major cities in the United States. Students can expect to pay about $450-$650 per month for a one-bedroom apartment.
