Research

The adult brain has the remarkable capacity to generate new neurons from neural stem cells. Neurogenesis in the subventricular zone is highly regulated by signals from the microenvironment in which the neural stem cells reside. However, the rate of neurogenesis declines in the aging brain. Deana utilizes a novel 3-dimensional tissue preparation along with in vivo and in vitro approaches to understand how neural stem cells in the subventricular zone change with age. Her work is focused on identifying mechanisms involved in the decline of neurogenesis with age by examining critical components of the neural stem cell microenvironment in aged animals.
