Research

Impaired social behavior is a treatment-resistant core symptom of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) that also manifests in schizophrenia and other disorders. Serotonergic system disruption during perinatal development has been implicated in autism etiology. Valentina is using mice to investigate how maternal serotonin transporter (SERT) expression, use of the selective serotonin inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine, and maternal tryptophan intake interact to shape the social behavior of mouse offspring. She is also investigating whether blockade of serotonin uptake from extracellular fluid by auxiliary serotonin transporters as an alternative to SSRI blockade of SERT will have a more benign impact on sociability.
