Research

Under inflammatory conditions, the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism in the brain is altered to produce excitotoxic metabolites and reactive nitrogen species. This aberrant up-regulation of the kynurenine pathway leads to depressive-like symptoms in mice. Microglia, the innate immune cell in the brain, may play a pivotal role in regulation of the kynurenine pathway. Allison's project focuses on understanding the relationship between kynurenine metabolites and microglial activation.
