Research
Dr. Aune's lab focuses on the late complications of chemotherapy and radiation in pediatric cancer survivors. One key effort is aimed at elucidating the early mechanisms that lead to congestive heart failure in these patients decades after treatment. Existing research has primarily focused on deleterious effects of doxorubicin (a chemotherapy agent known to cause heart disease) on cardiac myocytes. My work examines the effects of doxorubicin on the cardiac fibroblast, a significant support cell of the heart. Just as doxorubicin can cause mitochondrial toxicity in myocytes, we hypothesize that it will also cause mitochondrial toxicity in fibroblasts leading to persistent cellular dysfunction of this very important support cell.
