Research

Jennifer is studying the role of neuroimmune signaling molecules in the brain, focusing on the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6, in chronic stress-induced alterations in cognitive function in the prefrontal cortex. She is also investigating these pathways as potential targets of novel therapeutic strategies. She is utilizing a combination of molecular techniques, including qPCR, ELISA, RIA, western blots, viral vector-mediated gene delivery; neuroanatomical approaches, including in situ hybridization, immunocytochemistry, and fluorescence microscopy; and a sophisticated battery of behavioral assays, including tests of cognitive flexibility and social behavior, along with neuropharmacological methods to address these questions in laboratory rats. Her studies have relevance to understanding the mechanisms underlying stress-related psychiatric disorders such as depression, PTSD, and autism; co-morbidity with other medical illnesses including diabetes and cardiovascular disease; and avenues for novel strategies to treat these illnesses.
