Congratulations Deanna Apple, Ph.D.!!!
On January 19th, 2018, Neuroscience graduate student Deana Apple (pictured left) presented her dissertation defense titled: ‘Effects of calorie restriction on the aging neural stem cell niche’ to a lecture hall audience, whose members included her defense committee. She then went through a review of her dissertation and a question and answer process with the defense committee, before she was notified that she had successfully defended her dissertation and would be receiving her Ph.D.!
The Department of Pharmacology held a reception on January 23rd, 2018, in the Pharmacology Conference Room, to honor Dr. Apple’s accomplishment. Department of Pharmacology Professor and Center for Biomedical Neurosience Director, David Morilak, Ph.D. (right), recognized Deana’s accomplishments and contributions as a Neuroscience graduate student including: Association for Clinical and Translational Science Research Day Poster Award and Speaker invite, 
American Aging Association Travel Award Winner and Center for Biomedical Neuroscience Poster Award. She is also author/co-author on several papers. Deana’s mentor, Assistant Professor of Cell Systems and Anatomy Erzsebet Kokovay, Ph.D. (left) was not able to attend. In addition, the Graduate School Dean’s Office presented Deana with another gift…a new leather briefcase!
Deana graciously thanked everyone for their support. She has accepted a position as an ORISE fellow at the USAISR in the Clinical Decision Support and Automation Research Branch in San Antonio, Texas.
