James H. Woods, Ph.D.
I have had an active career in research and its administration. I have led center grants, program projects, and individual projects over the course of my career, and I have participated with a variety of scientific colleagues within the University of Michigan and other universities and organizations. I have a dream of developing a drug abuse intervention pharmacotherapy that has yet to be realized. I worked on developing the enzyme CocE as an antagonist of cocaine, which went so far as clinical trials. I supported the use of mecamylamine for the treatment of nicotine abuse. MCAM and similar pseudo-irreversible mu opioid receptor antagonists are old dreams that may have a better chance of coming true, due to the extreme need for such a compound at the present time. This project should give us some much needed information about MCAM, and how useful it might be in treating one or more aspects of the opioid crisis. I look forward with considerable enthusiasm to working with the collaborators to bring this product to fruition.
